Empowered by sustainable energy

Any project. Anytime. Anywhere.

We're ready to grow.

Urban Solar has grown from a one-man operation to a multi-million dollar company with a dedicated leadership team and decades of unrivaled craftsmanship. Our team has one goal — to delight each Urban Solar customer. This fuels us as we continue to provide more homeowners and businesses in South Florida and across the country with an outstanding customer experience and the highest quality solar and back-up storage solutions.

1978

Humble beginnings

Our story began when Vergona Electric was formed in 1978, as a South Florida-based, family-owned residential electrical contracting company. Led by founder Michael Vergona Sr., the company primarily installed wiring in new homes and provided service calls to properties throughout Boca Raton and the surrounding areas. After merging with another local company, the name was later changed to Vergona/Bowersox (VB) Electric.

2008

VB Engineering is formed

VB Electric began shifting its focus toward solar-power innovation, ultimately changing the company’s name to VB Engineering. This enabled them to work directly with utility companies to provide utility-scale solar engineering and consulting for multi-megawatt, ground-mount projects throughout the U.S. In addition, they also offered commercial solar engineering, mostly projects that were smaller than utility scale. The company’s leadership made this shift because they determined it was the best way to serve the businesses and residents of their native Florida.

2009

Bringing solar to schools, storm shelters

VB Engineering was awarded the SunSmart Schools and Emergency Shelters Program solar installation, which, at the time, was one of the largest such projects in the state of Florida. The program called for the installation of 10-kilowatt solar arrays at schools that are designated as emergency shelters throughout the state. More than 100 Florida schools are now equipped with solar battery backup systems, thanks to the program, which was initiated in conjunction with the Florida Department of Agriculture, Consumer Services’ Office of Energy and the Energy Department.

2012

As the son rises, VB Solar is formed

After years working alongside his father as part of the VB organization, Michael Vergona Jr. formed VB Solar, creating a new opportunity to supply and service homeowners and businesses with sensible solar solutions. VB Solar focused solely on battery-based residential and commercial solar systems in Florida and the Bahamas.

2014

Urban Solar is born

As the solar industry grew, so too did VB Solar’s product and service offerings. To reflect its continued and elevated passion, the company changed its name to Urban Solar Group and installed Michael Vergona Jr. as President. This transition created an opportunity for shifts in branding, marketing and business strategies, all of which reflected the growth of both the solar sector and the company as a whole.

2014

Urban Solar goes west

Urban Solar acquired Key Power Services, a solar company based in Naples, Florida, that serviced off-grid homes on Keewaydin Island. This expansion provided Urban Solar with a footprint on Florida’s Gulf Coast, where they continued delivering solar solutions including battery backups, generators, propane tanks and other electrical elements.

2016

Urban Solar + VB Engineering join forces

Urban Solar and VB Engineering merged, making it possible for the company to provide clients and partners with a full spectrum of solar and electrical capabilities, operating as Urban Solar Group with Michael Vergona Jr. remaining as President. This acquisition enables Urban Solar to truly specialize in all areas or residential and commercial solar installation, as well as design and electrical contracting. The company holds both a state-certified solar contractor license and state-certified electrical contractor license.

2017

Further expansion

Urban Solar opened additional offices in Fort Myers, expanding the company’s footprint on Florida’s west coast and making it possible to more effectively serve commercial and residential clients throughout the state. Urban Solar was also awarded a contract with Lennar and SunStreet to install solar power systems on more than 400 new construction homes in one of the developer’s communities in Fort Myers.

2017

Urban Solar team continues to grow

As the demand for solar grew, Urban Solar positioned itself to scale up along with it, ensuring the company could continue offering the level of quality and service their clients are accustomed to. In 2017, Urban Solar exceeded 25 employees on its team.

2018

Urban Solar opens new HQ

Having outgrown its previous headquarters’ facility, Urban Solar moved its operations into an upgraded 8,000-square-foot office and warehouse space.

2019

Serving the entire Sunshine State

Having doubled the size of its team in less than two years, Urban Solar entered 2019 with more than 50 employees and clients located throughout the state of Florida.

2021

Going National! US taking over the U.S.

With the right team, support, and resources in place, Urban Solar expanded its commercial installation capabilities beyond Florida and into the southeastern United States. Our continued growth allows us to bring high-quality solar solutions to more businesses, helping them reduce costs and embrace clean energy.

2023

A strategic partnership positioned the company for greater growth, fostering climate solutions and paving the way for future expansions.
